March roared into Kentucky over night with thunderous storms and raucous hail. By morning the rushing waters of the Elkhorn swallowed the sounds of the city. Oldest ran outside for a moment to capture a photo of the muddy creek. Their usual play area was covered by several feet of water. We spent part of the morning watching the storm and let the younger ones sleep in a bit before beginning school.

Shannon and Oldest went to the old house to get it ready to put back on the market. They were gone for about four days. The days seemed like forever to me. My mom came up to stay with us so I could go to work. She took great care of the kids and I am glad that she was able to help

us. She was really excited for this visit because this was the first time I’ve ever asked her for help. I hadn’t realized that I’d never requested her assistance in the past and had no idea such a request would make her so happy. I swear Oldest grew an inch over the time he was away.

In school we are learning about the American Revolution and the Constitution. I came home from the library with several documentaries. We’ve really enjoyed one called Constitution USA with Peter Sagal. The show mostly covers the Amendments and would be great to watch while learning about civil rights as well. We just finished reading about Paul Revere and the important connection he provided between the working middle class and the upper class revolutionaries. Littlest is a bit behind the older crew. He just finished learning about Jamestown. I asked him to sum up the story. He let me know that “sum” is a math term for adding and not the proper way to ask for a narration. I may not survive his education…

We’ve enjoyed three poetry breakfasts since I last posted an update. We had a little Valentine’s Day theme for one of them. The kids wrote cards for their friends and made a few crafts. We had a fun morning then I made them do math. When I got home from work that night I was surprised to find a card and a large plate of handmade chocolates waiting on the kitchen counter! Yum!!!

Last night we went to see the Lego Batman movie with the kids. Even though the irreverent movie is basically a really long toy commercial, I enjoyed all the Batman references and laughed hard enough to cry.
